Praise for The Art of Daniel Clowes: "Even if you're not an avid reader of books and strips (your loss), this volume will entice and entertain." -The Atlantic "The real selling point of Modern Cartoonist is the art. It includes all of Clowes’s best-known illustrations as well as rare and previously unpublished work, all reproduced from the original art, and also includes essays by noted contributors such as designer Chip Kidd and cartoonist Chris Ware. ![]() ![]() The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist is the first monograph on this award-winning, New York Times–bestselling creator, compiled with his complete cooperation. With each successive graphic novel (Ghost World, David Boring, Ice Haven, Wilson, Mister Wonderful ), Clowes has been praised for his emotionally compelling narratives that reimagine the ways that stories can be told in comics. ![]() In the late 1980s his groundbreaking comic book series Eightball defined indie culture with wit, venom, and even a little sympathy. ![]() Throughout his 25-year career, alternative cartoonist/screenwriter Daniel Clowes has always been ahead of artistic and cultural movements. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My favorite part about this book, was the flaws. This did not read like a wedding romance novel I have read a thousand times, and it also included some more modern things (for instance the bride is an influence) without making those modern things sound dumb and ridiculous. Sariah really hit it out of the park with this. Weddings in romance novels are written about a lot and it takes quite a bit of work on the authors part to make it feel new and inventive. ![]() With a plot such as this, the book could have easily been terrible. But as this is a romance novel, of course she ends up meeting the mysterious and gorgeous Camden who she ends up falling for over the span of a week. She has problems and flaws, but she takes her job seriously, and does an excellent job. It is a really good idea, and the character of Rachel is written very well. It is kind of like a wedding planner, but instead they are your friend going to activities with you and making sure you are taken care of. ![]() I liked the idea that the bride can hire a bridesmaid to be there for their day. The Paid Bridesmaid by Sariah Wilson took an interesting concept, and actually kind of made me wish it was a real job. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 2 encompasses their run on The New 52 and more! I noted at the time that I would revisit Mr. Links to those posts are in the Pemberley Library, down the page a bit under “Cinema & Literature” and the submenu “Books and Music.” One of the literature authors I mentioned was Robert van Gulik, who wrote the Judge Dee series of detective mystery novels.
